About the Founder

It all began with one Mum’s search for socks her son would wear...

The Sensory Smart Store was founded by Mel Thomsett in the New Forest, Hampshire.

It’s almost unimaginable to most people not to be able to put socks on your child, but that’s the conundrum that Mel was faced with a few years ago. Mel is Mum to a son who was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 years and 9 months.

After researching Sensory Processing Disorders and getting some help from an Occupational Therapist, Mel realised that some of his mysterious behaviour was his way of trying to cope. He wasn’t being challenging - he was being challenged. Big difference!

He insisted on having all the labels cut out of his clothing, and soft seams and could only tolerate certain fabrics.
Socks were a serious bone of contention, and he went mostly barefoot for almost 2 years until Mel finally discovered the SmartKnitKids Absolutely Seamless Socks range.

Her journey inspired her to open the Sensory Smart Store to bring solutions to anyone trying to navigate family life with a sensory processing disorder in the mix and to help other kids struggling with sensitivities to seams, labels, fabrics and textures.
Since she first set up shop over 10 years ago, the Sensory Smart Store has grown to include a range for sensitive adults, Chewigems, and all sorts of other solutions that Mel has discovered along the way that can help our sensitive little ones and not so little ones!

If it helps kids stay calm and comfy, we like it, and you’ll probably find it in our store!

Over time we have responded to customer requests and added new products according to demand, and now we are stocking all sorts of products to help all sorts of sensitivities, conditions and sensory needs.

If you don't see what you're looking for, we'd love to hear from you so please get in touch and see what we can do to help...
